Taiwan’s leading telecom operator Chunghwa Telecom recently announced that it has received Taiwan’s first 5G license from the NCC (National Communications Commission), with an aim to launch 5G services based on NSA (Non-Standalone) architecture on July 1 this year, the Economic Daily News reported on June 4. The telecom giant has spent NT$138 billion (US$4.6 billion) for 5G spectrum auction, including NT$45.7 billion (US$1.5 billion) for 90MHz in the 3.5GHz band and NT$618 million (US$20.9 million) for 600MHz in the 28GHz band. On top of that, the operator has deployed 5G base stations in six major cities in Taiwan, including Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung. The operator said it will launch its 5G services in partnerships with Ericsson and Nokia that will provide 5G RAN (Radio Access networks. FarEasTone is reportedly to be the next telco to obtain the 5G license. Meanwhile, the NCC stated that the review of Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan Start Telecom, and Asia Pacific Telecom are still at an early stage of review and their 5G services will be available sometime in the third quarter of 2020.
